Where We Stayed: Quiet Luxury Above English Harbour
We based ourselves at LaVista Antigua, a small, private boutique BnB tucked above the coastline.
It’s the kind of place you don’t stumble upon — you choose it.
The road in is undeniably rough (this is where you quickly learn why an SUV matters), but once you arrive, it makes sense. Total quiet. Expansive views. And a feeling that you’re removed from everything without being disconnected from the island.
The snorkeling directly from the property was some of the best we experienced — calm, clear water and reef life just steps from where you’re staying. Mornings here feel unstructured in the best way: coffee, ocean, and nowhere you need to be.
The hosts elevate it further — warm, thoughtful, and the kind of presence that enhances a stay without ever feeling intrusive.
This is what boutique Caribbean travel should feel like.
Getting Around: Why a Rental Car (and the Right One) Matters
To experience Antigua properly, a car isn’t optional — it’s essential.
Distances aren’t far, but the island isn’t built for passive travel. Beaches, viewpoints, and restaurants are spread out, and some of the best places require a bit of effort to reach.
Because of that, we’d strongly recommend renting an SUV with proper clearance. Roads can be uneven, occasionally steep, and sometimes unpaved — especially when heading toward more secluded areas.
The payoff is worth it.
We reserved a Suzuki Jimny ahead of arrival, and I wouldn’t do this trip any other way. Titi Rent a Car made the process seamless, meeting us at the airport and with a convenient base in English Harbour.
English Harbour: A Must Stop for Slow Afternoons
Even if you’re not staying directly in English Harbour, it’s one of the most enjoyable areas to spend time.
There’s a subtle sophistication here — not overdone, just quietly refined.
Stop into Premier Cru to pick up a bottle of rosé or something more special for the evening. It’s the kind of place that feels curated rather than commercial.
Then wander over to The Store by La Brasserie — a genuinely excellent French bakery where mornings stretch a little longer over coffee and pastries.
This is Antigua at its best: unhurried, intentional, and effortlessly enjoyable.
Beaches Worth Your Time (and the Ones That Aren’t)
Antigua is known for its 365 beaches — but not all are created equal.
Long Bay Beach
Soft sand, calm water, and just enough development to make it comfortable without losing its charm. This is an easy, go-to beach — the kind where you arrive for an hour and stay for three.
Half Moon Bay
A completely different feel.
More open, more raw, and noticeably quieter. We found it nearly empty — ideal for snorkeling and long walks without interruption. It’s not polished, which is exactly why it works.
Reefs remain healthy because visitors respect them. As travelers, our responsibility is simple but crucial:
- Use reef-safe sunscreen only
- Avoid touching coral or marine life
- Pack out what you pack in
Choosing reef-safe sunscreen, sun-protective rash guard, and carrying a reusable insulated water bottle helps ensure beaches and reefs remain as beautiful for future travelers as they are today.

Jolly Beach (Skip It)
This is where the cruise ship presence becomes noticeable. If you enjoy crowds (and some people do) then you’ll love this beach. It is beautiful, but somewhat commercial. Numerous hotels, resorts, vendors and crowds. We took a picture and left. This was not for us.
Busier, louder, and more transactional. If you’re seeking the slower, more refined side of Antigua, this isn’t where you’ll find it.
Natural Beauty Beyond the Beaches
Antigua isn’t just about where you lay your towel.
A stop at Devil’s Bridge offers something completely different — dramatic Atlantic waves crashing through natural limestone arches. It’s raw, powerful, and worth the detour.
Moments like this add dimension to the trip — a reminder that the island has more depth than just its shoreline.
The Best Meal We Had (and Didn’t Expect)
Mama Pasta
Unexpectedly, this was our standout meal. Twice.
Conveniently located at Long Bay Beach, Mama Pasta is unpretentious, warm, and genuinely memorable — the kind of place that feels discovered rather than recommended. After hours in the sun and water, it was exactly what we wanted: homemade food, relaxed atmosphere, and a sense of authenticity that’s hard to manufacture. Hot tip: Get there early and enjoy the view.
Not everything needs to be fine dining to be exceptional.
Why You Should Add Barbuda to Your Trip
If Antigua is the foundation, Barbuda is the moment that elevates the entire experience.
This isn’t about choosing one over the other.
It’s about understanding that they offer something completely different — and that together, they create a far more complete trip.
Getting to Barbuda: Skip the Ferry
The ferry is an option — but not one we’d recommend.
Long, often rough, and not particularly enjoyable, it takes away from what should feel like a seamless extension of your trip.
Flying, on the other hand, changes everything. Faster, smoother, and aligned with the experience Barbuda deserves.
If you’re planning this in advance, I’d strongly suggest securing flights early — availability is limited and it completely changes the experience.
What Makes Barbuda Unforgettable
Princess Diana Beach
Expansive, untouched, and almost impossibly quiet.
This is where Barbuda reveals itself — vast stretches of soft sand and water so clear it feels unreal. It’s less about what you do here and more about how it makes you feel.
The Pink Sand Beach
Subtle and shifting with the light, the pink tones are understated rather than dramatic — which somehow makes them more beautiful.
Frigate Bird Sanctuary
Quiet, expansive, and filled with movement.
Watching hundreds of frigate birds in their natural habitat feels more like observation than tourism — one of those rare experiences that stays with you long after you leave.
The Upgrade That Changes Everything
For a truly unforgettable day, this is where you elevate the experience.

Choose your beaches carefully — the right ones will feel effortless, the wrong ones will feel crowded almost immediately. Take the time to explore beyond where it’s easy, whether that’s a winding road to a secluded bay or an unassuming restaurant that ends up being your favourite meal of the trip.
